  1. I believe the monument is the monument to the great fire of London. The ‘great church’ referred to is St Magnus The Martyr. I have found many stories of people jumping off the top of the monument and the bodies being stored in the police watch hut, under one of the arches of London Bridge until coroners inquest on body

  2. Thank you Rachelle…your comment helped me determine that the caption must actually be ‘Gracechurch Street’ and not ‘Great Church Street’ as I had read it. The church in the background is, indeed, St Magnus The Martyr.
